"BREATHING BOTTLE"
At Terracotta Wines we have created “the breathing bottle”. The bottle is reusable, handmade by an Valencian artisan (made in Spain).
The mixture of different types of clay and the precise firing temperatures provide the bottles with the necessary strength and consistency to avoid the seeping of the liquid contained in the bottle over time.
This elaboration process provides the wine with a continuous micro-oxygenation in the bottle, a common feature of the amphorae (tinajas) and wooden barrels, without the flavour of the latter, but preserving its primary aromas, respecting the grape’s identity and terroir.
A handmade bottle
Every bottle is handmade, one by one, so we warn you that they might have some aesthetic imperfections.
The fact of being cast in a mould, once per piece, is an added value that we want to have in our product. It is a unique container, Patent nr. 201731281 (9), that is the reason for the wine to acquire its unique features.
The earthy colour of the bottle is very important, because a dark material filters less light, avoiding photo polymerization. In this fashion, the wine keeps longer its fruity aromas.
For this very first vintage, having created an innovative product, we advise you to drink the wine during the first six months, when it has better preserved and so you can enjoy it a fruity aroma at its best. After that, the wine will have a similar evolution to any other aging process.
It may occur a loss (ouillage) as the time passes due to an extended ageing.
The maturation process that features this bottle consists in the micro-oxygenation of the wine, that is why is not advisable to let the wine ageing for longer than a year.
To clean the bottle and reuse it is preferable to wash it with tartaric acid, which is easy to find in any supermarket.
The materials of the “breathing bottle”
It is important to clarify that the terracotta has always been used for the transport of wine. It is a clay-based kind of ceramic (from the ancient Greek “κέραμος” which means potter’s clay), like stoneware or porcelain.
The difference lays on the firing process for this material, which is done at temperatures that range from 800 to 1050 degrees, which means lower energy costs and fewer CO2 emissions (hence, pollution reduction); while the rest are materials that have to be fired at higher temperatures, involving the material vitrification and then the closure of the pores thereof.
This bottle porosity allows the wine to age in it, day after day. It could be comparable to ageing in a wooden barrel.
The clay used in the manufacture of the bottles is of Spanish origin and is suitable as food cotainer because it does not contain any heavy metals.
To this end, Terracotta Wines has undergone tests of the materials used for its own bottles at the AINIA Technological Institute in Paterna.
